We are bringing back a 1G Project!! It's been many years since we built a 1g here. Last one was our Hugger Orange 1991 Talon. We ran a best with that of 9.90's with a VPC in it. This time the project was encouraged for a few reasons and by a few circumstances.
The last three years of the DSM/EVO Shootout have basically been dominated, in the Quick 16, by DSM's with automatic transmissions in them. At first I dismissed it as a fluke, had no interest in even looking into it. After three years of seeing them getting faster and running consistently I got more interested. I wanted to build a car we could actually race and go rounds with and an auto 1g seemed to fit the description. A few more reasons for the project. The 20th Annual DSM/EVO Shootout is coming up, damn, 20 years of Shootouts. Each one has grown and each one has gotten better. For 2012 the 20th Annual is a three day event, two full days of racing at the track. I wanted to bring back what I started with, a 1991 Eagle Talon AWD. This time it's going to be an automatic and a bit more race oriented than it was back in 1991 though! The last reason for this build is a short story.....Myself, Jarrod, Kevin and Dean Lawson all took a trip down to North Carolina this November for a race. It was the first race Kevin, Dean and myself had been together to in many-many years and the weekend reminded me of all the things I love about racing. Friendship, laughs, dinners, drinks, laughs, conversation, laughs and of course the racing although to be honest the racing is a small part of it. The three of raced together for quite a few years, Kevin drove our Conquest, the Hugger Orange 1G and my current RS, the times we had are not replaceable. So, that's the reason I am building this car.
Let me also add I owe some thanks to a few guys. Kevin at Kiggly Racing for a TON of tech on the automatic transmissions, Aaron at English Racing and Jeff Bush, both for answering questions for me to help this go a little easier.
Let me throw in a few details of what I plan to do and then I'll get to the pictures we've taken so far of the car and the build.
I am going to duplicate my RS build as far as the power plant goes. 2.3 6 bolt engine, 2g head, 2g intake, forward facing HTA86 turbo kit, BR COP ignition, BR Spec custom cams, BR Race FMIC, BR i/c pipes, BR alternator relocation kit, ECM Link, 2000 cc injectors and running on E98. So as close as I can get to my EVO is set up now. I'm doing this because I have so much time and development in that package I just think it's going to kick ass in this chassis.
Things we plan to develop: A Race FMIC with different routing than our current kit for the forward facing kit. Light weight center member and the front cross member under the radiator. Aluminum bolt in fuel cell that uses the new Walbro 400 LPH pumps, twin intake pumps. A bolt in 3000GT rear end kit. A bolt in parachute mounts. The car will have an NHRA Legal cage in it. Kirky race seat. Parachute. We will be running STM's new front brake kit along with stock rear brakes and some good Hawk pads. We will be offering built 1g automatic transmissions as I have one of the best guys in the business on the job. We will also be offering 1g torque converters I've got one of the top guys in the country on that job. I have to obviously run the stuff we are building first and prove it's as good as I am hoping it to be before we start selling it all.
I am building a race car, it will be gutted but will be what I'd picture my original 4Bangr to have morphed into by this time. So the interior will be gutted for the most part. Fiberglass, hinged hatch with Lexan window. The rest of the glass will remain stock with working door windows. The hood will also be fiberglass. The full dash will remain in the car but with just a few aftermarket gauges. We will also be offering nice aluminum door panels and some other nice aluminum panels for inside the car, like the large flat area next to the rear seats. The entire interior and cage will be painted along with the outside of the car.
Now my original 1991 Eagle Talon, as most of you know, now belongs to John Shepherd. It was Black Cherry when I sold it to him and I plan to bring this car back to look like that one. So it's going to be black cherry with a black top just like my original.
Sorry, getting long winded but I'm excited about the project! My 13 year old son Zachary is getting his first real automotive education on the car I bought. For the last week he has had the task of stripping the complete interior out of it and learning how nice dry ice makes getting sound deadening out of a car! He did a great job and has the car stripped down nicely now.
Without further delay, here are some shots of the car as it sits now:
CAR:
2 ENGINE SHOTS:
NO SUN ROOF:
NO WIPERS:
NO SEAT BELT MOUNTS:
FLOOR & SOUND DEADENER REMOVAL:
Next week the car is being taken to Reese Chassis, the same company that built the tube chassis Talon for me and the Conquest. He will be building the cage, parachute and all the custom parts we want to offer to all of you.
Thanks for reading!

Welcome back to DSM land. I remember the black cherry car back in the 16G days at MIR.
