I don't know of a how-to write up on pulling the engine out. It's not all that easy to be honest. Factory service manual may be the best solution. I will add that if you have to question how to do it and need a manual, you may be better off finding a good shop to just pull it for you.

im very motivated to do it myself. it seems like dropping the whole subframe seems the easiest cause then it can be lifted right back in? maybe? ha ya i could really use a manual

im no stranger in the garage but never attempted an awd engine/tranny pull. back to my one question. is it easier to drop the whole thing? or just the tranfer and tranny out the bottom?

Will you be using a lift, or on the ground with jack-stands?

If you have the tools to do it, its not a bad job. Cherry picker with load leveler/ 2 jack stands/ and your main tools.

It's pretty straight forward, remove everything attached to the engine. Remove both axles and unbolt the t-case from the transmission. You'll be leaving the t-case in the car while you pull the motor/trans out. You'll want to drain your fluids as well (motor oil, transmission fluid, engine coolant). Some people drop the motor while others pull it out.
