A little over a month ago I sold off my EVO IX seats and finally pulled the trigger on a pair of NRG full carbon fiber bucket seats. I have had my eyes on these seats for quite some time now and couldn't be happier with them. I spoke with NRG a few times and they helped me pick out the correct size, etc..and once ordered showed up at my door in only a few days. Thanks NRG you guys rock!!
Right out of the box all I could say was WOW!!! These are super light weight. The seats themselves weigh in at only 12 pounds. I also order a pair of NRG 3" 6 point seat belts w/ a quick release cam lock system from them.
After talking with a few helpful people I finally figured out how to mount these suckers in my EVO. I had a set of Corbeau sliders laying around and purchased a set of Buschur Racing seat lowering brackets. Those two parts plus the side mount brackets that came with the NRG seats made for a nice and easy bolt in application. I was going to mount them w/o the sliders and just use the BR seat lowering brackets because of my height (5' 8") I needed the seat a lot closer to the steering wheel. Plus I like being able to adjust my seat on a daily basis. Depending on your height sliders might not be needed but I do recommend them. Overall the NRG seats with ALL hardware, sliders, BR seat lowering brackets, etc..came in at 19.6 lbs each. My OEM EVO IX seats were 37.6 lbs each. That is a pretty nice weight savings!
Next came the seat belts and what to do with them. With my car becoming faster and faster each year I wanted to add a little safety to the mix. I still do not want to cage my car. It is a street car and I want to keep it that way as long as possible. My local track gave me some shit last time out for not having a cage but let me run anyway. I'm hoping they will look in now and see the new seats, seat belts, harness bar and let me go. We'll see I guess haha.
I called up Buschur and had them make up one of their harness bars with a black crinkle powder coat and quick release tabs. Buschur always amazes me with how nice their products are! At first I thought it was going to be heavy but after a quick visit to the scale I was quite pleased. With all hardware, brackets, bars, pins, etc..the overall weight came in at 11.4 lbs. The powder coat finish is top notch and really goes well with the new seats and my interior.
Installation was pretty straight forward and didn't take much time at all. I really like how the quick release pins work. I doubt I'll ever take it out but if I needed to I would be able to do it in under a minute without any tools. It will be nice to have a spot to mount a GoPro to this coming racing season.
Overall I am very pleased. The seats are actually pretty comfortable and have a few adjustments built into the side brackets that help with tilt. The NRG seat belts were a little heavier than the OEM stuff I took out. I decided not to use the crotch belt and only make it a 4 point harness right now. I can always add the remaining belt in the future if I feel like it. With the new seat belts in and tightened up I don't budge when I'm seated. The seats offer great side support as well.
In the end I removed a total of 22.4 lbs. If you were to just use your OEM seat belts and no haness bar the weight savings would be even better.
Anyway on with the pics
