Default evodan2004's atempt at 9s take 1... failed

for anyone who is interested in my progress and mess i figured i would post this here.

ok well i hit the track. today was one of the worst track days i ever had. but thats ok. new setup + ****ty driver+ new clutch + ****ty driver + nervous as hell + ****ty driver =s these types of days.

id like to note the car ran ''mechanically'' flawless. no issues at all. the driver and that axle though is a hole nother story.

    i got 5 passes. all about 36psi.

1st pass i didnt run out. had some tech issues but after this pass i had it taken care of. bogged off the line and shifted out of 3rd about half way. netted a 12.2 at 135mph.

    2nd pass 1.62 60 foot and missed 2nd gear.

3rd pass. 1.71 60 foot 10.4 at 140. i hit 109 in the 1/8th. i do not know where i shfted each gear at. i got to much nerves going on in my head.

    60' - 1.71
    330 - 4.62
    1/8 - 6.90
    MPH - 109.46
    1000 - 8.84
    1/4 - 10.45
    MPH - 140.88

4th pass. 1.66 60 foot missed 2nd again. at this point i am noticing on the good 60 foots i cant shift into 2nd. im locked out. why i do not know but all the other gears are perfect. so it is probably me.

5th and final pass 1.62 60 and broke a rear axle. again missing 2nd gear. on this pass i turned the boost up some too. but never got to see where it was gonna go.

o well. thats my day today at the track. ill get some vids up in a few. i need to calm down. im not mad at the car. i could care less if it brakes. its gonna happen. thats racing. im just mad at my self for not being with it. i dont know. i need to relax.

here is a vid. ignore my girl at the end. she didnt know i got things squared away with tech. watching this vid i really need to shift faster. IMO its slow. i thought i was doing good. dumb driver

    10.4 @ 140mph

here is my broken axle pass.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGLqKvWFyOI

its ok though. 1st time this year with a completely different feeling car. once i get the axle replaced its on to ''take 2'' i seriously need to step my game up. tips would be great right now. ''hint hint''

i think i have a problem. i dont know. people with experience on rear broken axles can tell me more.

the shaft that go's into the rear end is where it broke. there is a piece still in there and i cant get it out. but worse is the thing broke into a million pieces. so does this mean all that metal is now floating around in my brand new TRE rear diff? here is some pics.

    see the crack.

    some small updates.

the T.R.E. rear is on its way back to job so he can make sure i did not screw it up. i am probably ok but i just want to make sure.

i have a set of rear axles on there way and the rear should be back next monday. so i hope to be at the track for ''take 2'' that week.

You know you can turn the "go" down, so you can practice grabin 2nd gear... Thats the dif between a good pass and a great one.... The synchros in the trans wont last much longer if you keep missin 2nd..

I know its hard to grab 2nd when you eyeballs are in the back of your head... I've been there..lol.... Remember to incline your seat up a lil bit.. This will help keep your body closer to the shifter. Unless your practicing for the FAST5...

After my first day of racin grabin 1.7 -60 foots, I must of missed 2nd gear 5 times...Then after a few trips to the track I got it..I remember feeling a world of difference between a 1.5x 60 ft and a 1.6x.. Its almost like there is brain trauma during the launch....lol...

    Good luck..

Ahhhh yes, a flash back at my first attempt at a 10. Sucks but its an easy inexpensive fix.

yea i know i can turn it down. lol. i will next time. i think the reason i missed 2nd 3 times was because each of them passes i was pegging the limiter at 9800rpm and trying to shift. i dont think ill ever get it in gear at that RPM. next trip out though i am dropping the 2step and going to try to slip the clutch a little more. this is tough stuff and i do not ''no lift to shift'' so i think that may hurt me as well.

Damn, I don't know how I missed this thread.

What did you do for axles? Typicall the diff is not hurt, just needs sprayed out with brake clean and the plug is magnetic, does a nice job of pulling those little pieces into it.

The Hoosier's you bought are axles breakers, as much as the Nitto's were. You need a soft widewall tire to keep from braking parts. The pass I watched shows the car spinning, the reason you aren't getting into 2nd gear is you are trying to shift on the spin, you have to pedal the car, pump the gas, to get the tires to bite, then ride 1st gear out until it is hooked up and not spinning, then shift.

thanks for the tips. i am clueless as you can see, haha. i sent the rear back just because i wanted to make sure it was ok. he said it was fine and next time do like you said. just clean it out. i didnt know. i was just trying to be safe. the Hoosier has a much softer side wall then my nitto's. i here there still axle breakers but i am hoping there a little more friendly then my nittos. i plan to buy a new street tire. what do you recommend for the 17 inch rim but keeping the 25.5 26 inch height.

thanks for the shifting tips. i get so caught up in the momment i freeze and do not think of these things like peddling it and what not. im way to focused on one thing. i will give it a try sunday. i have so much to try i dont know where to start. bu my guess is to start with lowering the 2 step to 6k VS 6500 and to peddle it like you said if i am spinning hard. if this works then maybe i should try the pre load thing with the E-Brake. means a lot to me dave that you gave me some pointers. im not very good as you can tell. and thanks for all the parts and support you have given me. everything seems to be working great. except the driver. do you sell them too? ha

Forget the ebrake, you only need it if the car is rolling because the starting line isn't flat, don't waste your time adding that to the process. Yes, drop the two step a little at a time and don't forget, DON'T dump the clutch, let it slide out.

I am not a professional driver nor am I an owner of a fast Evo. I can tell you from experience that if the track is flat and you are rolling, you might want to adjust your clutch. As for what my motto is: "I would rather burn some clutch than break some diffs." Good luck.

im not sure if your telling me my clutch is slipping or just pointing it out. either way. the track is flat and the clutch does not clip. the car does not move. i was recommended to pull the E-Brake to preload the car. thats where that all came from. but i am going to do what dave said and just lower the 2 step and try to slip the clutch more and peddle it if need be.

Sorry I was awake for 35+ hours when I replied to this. I misread what Dave was talking about you about rolling. My apologies. Good luck with your up coming track event.

    i got some updates.

hit the track today. i did better in some area's but crappy in others. thanks david for telling me to take my time. i needed that. notice my 7 minute reaction times. also the launch control was dropped to 6k. sooooooooooooo much better. no more pegging the rev limiter. even though i slowed up my 1.2 shift it still had no problems shifting it. i did have 2 passes i missed 2nd but i think it was me more then the rpm. i just got ahead of my self.

anyways. i still dont get it. its still as quick as it was on pump gas with 120 more HP then pump gas. i just do not understand. again. on pump the car hit 10.37 @ 137 1.68 60 foot. 31psi. on 100oct. i crack 10.4s all day. and today a 10.32 at 141 with a 1.64 60 foot and 38psi. the car is also 65lbs lighter then it was on pump gas. i just dont get it.

ill be going back to the track to give it another go soon.

    here are some vids.

Are you re-tuning when adding race gas? If not, you should be. Keep at it. As I always like to say, if it were easy to run 9's everyone would be doing it. Don't complain until you run a 1/2 dozen 10.0's!

yes the car is 100% retuned for 100oct. i have 2 maps. pump 93 and 100. but the car has been on the 100 map since last year. lol.

i hope to avoid the 10.000 glitch. haha. but i need to get close 1st.

next on my list is to learn NLTS. im blinded to how it will help but i am going to do it.
