Default NASA Mid Ohio TTD track record and class win

For the last few years I've been running with NASA, started in the HPDE program. Last year I moved to TT (time trials) last year.

I've been using our 2006 Eclipse GT V6 mostly. I've run our EVOX and Subaru TR too.

Last year I put a set of Megan coil overs on the car, Yokahama AD08's, our cold air inlet, a 2.5" SS cat back exhaust I built, Rotora big brake kit. The car was fun to drive but in TTE where it was classed it was just too heavy and limited on tire choice, it simply wasn't competitive.

This year I decided to move to TTD, one class up but would allow me to add some tires and other parts.

My goal was to qualify to run Nationals at Mid Ohio this year and try to place in the top three and attempt to set a track record.

Last minute this week I signed up and started on the car. The biggest problem, only problem actually, has been the Rotora rotors breaking in half. I did some trading for a front set of EVO8 brakes and installed those. I also bought a set of Rota DPT's 17x9's. Added some Hankook Z214's to those, 245-40-17's. These tires and wheels dropped 9 pounds per corner!

I took points for a front diff and an additional 30 pounds of weight loss but ended up not installing the diff and was 16 pounds over my standard weight and 46 over my minimum weight.

So off to Mid Ohio for my first attempt in TTD and first time ever on slicks. It rained of course, slicks suck in the rain. A few laps in on our first session I spun the car 180 degrees at the top of the key hole, facing traffic sucks so I dropped it in reverse and got the hell off the track.

The track finally started to dry up in the afternoon but the back of the car was super loose, too loose for me. Shocks were set as soft as they'd go, I wasn't doing an alignment change so I dropped the air about 8 pounds in the rear. That was the ticket!

My best ever on the Pro course was 1:45, the Club course we were running best ever was 1:49. I dropped to a 1.45 with the tire pressure change, four seconds faster than my best last year. This moved me to first place and close to the current TTD track record of 1:44.47.

The final session of the day was a good one. Good track, good position, no traffic. I came in and checked scoring to find I set a new track record of 1:44.19. I have to admit, happy is an understatement!!

Ends up I won TTD, my first TT win and set the Club course track record.

Today, Sunday, I assumed the track would be set up Pro course, I really wanted a shot at the Pro course record. They ran the Club course again.....I decided to just run one session and head home. More traffic and I had a tough time getting into 3rd gear two other runs, still ran a 1:45.

Great weekend. Maybe this will help with my "drag racer only" reputation

I just checked the NASA results and it looks like I won again on Sunday by nearly 3 seconds. I should have stayed for the entire day and got more practice in.

Starting to look like a good year!

Haha, yes I do say that quite a bit. I seem to do pretty good on a road course.

Wow! That's great Dave! Congratulations on the wins!

    Update.

I will get some pictures up too.

I was on vacation for a few weeks and came back to find the Eclipse wasn't back from the chassis shop yet......so Wednesday afternoon we finally got the car back and Robert Fuller was here to set it up with new KW RobiSpec Club Sports. These are double adjustable coil overs. The Megan's I had been running came off. We had to paint the cage, bolt the new Kirky seat in and put the new RCI belts in. Robi then corner weighted the car and we found we were under weight. A trip to Dunhams for 100 pounds of steel plates and we welder and the car was at it's minimum weight and ready to go.

For reference the car is 3542 pounds at race weight with me in it. On our dyno the car makes 226 whp. According to NASA if the car is dyno'd on a Mustang Dyno you have to add 1.1%. This brought us up to 248 whp and that is how our minimum weight was set with a power to weight ratio of 14.25:1. Once at the track to be sure we were legal we put the car on the Dynojet and we made 247.5 whp.

The first few sessions were slow we were testing somethings. We then made the change that was needed and I picked up 5 seconds! In post #1 on here I was talking about winning the TTD class on Sat/Sun in the spring and setting the club course record. Well luckily for me this time we were running the pro course. I ran a 1.41:6 which put me in 1st place for the day.

Robert also jumped in the car to see how it felt and was getting his required runs in to qualify to run Nationals in September. He ran the car in TTC and I believe placed 4th.

This morning Robert took the car out first session and only got 3 runs, they were testing to see how people would react to the pace car and the session was ruined by some poor drivers after that.

Let me back up. The seat mounting was horrible for me. Too low, too far back and too reclined. There are three of us using the car now, myself, Robert and my step Dad Rick. Saturday night we went to Walmart and I bought a sleeping mat for camping and cut it to pad the seat so I'd fit better. I told Robert if I could see over the steering wheel I could gain a second.

Now, I get in the car after the 1st session Robert ran and busted out a 1.40:6! Exactly a second with more in it. I still need to do something with the seat as I am simply not able to reach the clutch or see well enough. This was a new track record though by over a half second and good enough for the win in TTD.

So I now how the Club course and Pro course track records for TTD and have four wins from the last four events. Not bad for an old drag racer.

My thanks to Robert Fuller/Robispec for all his hard work and friendship over the years and this weekend. Also a huge thanks to my step dad Rick for running all over the state for us to get weights/brakes and tires/wheels.
