This is an issue because it's my ONLY car right now. I have a 91 Eagle Talon TSi, that has pretty much had EVERYTHING rebuilt. Engine, head, trans, new turbo etc. I did the rebuild about 5 years ago so it's not new but up until about a year ago, this car was only driven on weekends.
My other daily driver died so I started to drive this and it runs so well, i just never bothered to get anything else.
Today, Black Friday, I was heading to work when I pulled off my street and I noticed, I had no boost. I could put the peddle all the way down and nothing. The boost gauge would hit like negative 5 or maybe 0 if I was lucky. No balls at all.
I pulled off into a gas station, shut off the car and did a quick once over and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I restarted the car and pulled back out into the road to a light that was red. As I was doing this, under very low throttle I noticed a high speed whining sound. Like a high speed fan.
I blipped the throttle and noticed the sound got faster and more noticeable. The sound you hear when a Super Charger is about to let loose.
I very carefully drove the two or three blocks back home and i noticed the whole time I was driving I had that low whine Super Charger sound coming from my turbo. I tried to build boost again, nothing.
Thoughts? The turbo was a brand new about 5 years ago, MHI EVO II Big 16G I bought from Buschur. It's only got around 30,000+ miles on it.
My first thought was the shaft snapped but one of my friends is telling me the sound sounds like it's spinning just fine because he thinks the sound I'm hearing is over spin due to a boost leak.
I drove the car 100 miles a 2 days ago, ZERO issues though so I don't see how I could just get a boost leak that bad, that's like a hose missing type of boost leak.
Thoughts? I really haven't had time to check it over. I had a have a friend give me a ride to work and I'm sitting here stressing out over the issue now.
I'm going to pull the cartridge out tonight and check it out but I'm curious if anyone can guess as to what I should be expecting to find.
Thanks.
