First do a compression check: reason HG maybe blown, or the Head has an crack at the exhaust side Valve 6 and water mixes up with Oil ( you will feel that crack in the morning when you start the engine...it sometimes feel like its starting with 3 cylinders only )
if it is doing fine, so no low compression ( engine should be at operating temps) ist maybe the following.
I had a few Evo 8īs, all built 2003, which had a failed rear Balancer shaft bearing ( the one in the middle of the block )
If it fails, you did not feel it instant. Some noise ( like piston slap ), sometimes a grinding noise at 1800 rpmīs.
Then the oil pressure indicator starts to glow at idle but only when the eingine is @ Operating temps, never when the oil is cold.
Also, it doesnt light @ more then 2000 Rpms.
If that bearing fails completely, its not possible to change it because it wears out the seat in the Block and there are no oversize ones available.
There is only one solution:
Remove the both Balancer shafts, Turn the Outside bearing for the back one as normal.
For the "in the Block" bearing, remove the small Hex screw the factory used for drilling the oil supply.
Make the tread to an M8 one and use an long Bolt with tapered end to block the hole from the main oil gallery to that bearing. Works fine, no more oil pressure lost through that hole.
To check the inside bearing, you will have to remove the oil Pan to get a look to the bearing.
On one of the engines here, it was completly out from the seat and sitting loose at the end of the balancer shaft.
Since my customer doesnt care about, it was going so worse that some rod an main bearings were also destroyed due to low oil pressure ( also the crank was done )
