A few months ago I was contacted to ask if we'd like to get involved with helping out rbanksracing.com for a 24 hour race. I was hesitant at first but thought if I could build an engine for this car and it could run 24 hours on the road course it certainly may change the idea in some peoples mind that we are a "drag race" shop only and it would be a hell of a bragging tool!
Well the car was brought here and dropped off, to say it was rather "used" would be an understatement. The car is a 1990 Eagle Talon and has seen it's share of use.
The cost of the car is limited and anyone putting too much into the car can be protested and the car can be crushed. I had to work on a limited budget using many used parts. The head was only cleaned up and gone through, no porting was done. The shortblock we built using all good used parts, but used none-the-less. Dan and Steve took their time eliminating anything that could fail as far as small vacuum and coolant lines and such in a long race. This worked out well but during the 24 hour race a heater hose did fail but was caught early and fixed. So the engine/head were freshened with good used parts and the installation and assembly were done here.
The car competed for it's first 24 hour race last weekend.
The rcbanks.com racing team powered by Buschur Racing won it's first 24 hour race competing in the 2010 UsedCar Racing "Longest Day" at Nelson Ledges Road Course in Ohio.
The car BR powered 1990 Eagle Talon qualified on the pole! It then went on to win the event with a 30 lap lead, which is about 45 minutes! The car completed 860 laps in 24 hours, which is 1720 miles! The top speed was 110 mph and the fastest lap was 1:26 with an average speed of 83 mph on that lap.
Now keep in mind, these cars need to be worth about $500 and the DSM was competing on bone stock suspension!
Here are some pictures of the "Talonator" in action.
Very proud of this. The only other guys I know that have built 4g63's and competed in a 24 hour race with a win was Archer Racing, many years ago. I feel like we, along with rbanksracing.com are in a very special league of people with this win.
The engine is in fine shape btw and will be going directly to another 24 hour race. Let's see just how many races this engine can finish without being taken apart!
One more point of interest. There was some confusion. We needed an oil cooler for the car when it came here and asked for a good used one. The good used cooler was brought but no oil cooler lines were ever supplied and we had plugged the oil cooler ports off at the engine. Robin, the owner of the race team didn't notice this. So this car was run for the entire race and one practice session before the grueling 24 hour race with NO oil cooler!
