Those are the official race results. Now for a personal overview of the event.
First off these events are a lot of work and coordination from a lot of people. Each race the guys at our shop have to do their normal work schedule, plus all preparation for the event. It's a long week followed by a long weekend and I can't thank them enough for their hard work and dedicationd.
There were some people coming in as early as Thursday, to include Richard from DSport. He shot the BadBish for a feature and the spot he shot it has been something I've always wanted done, watch DSport Magazine for the feature coming up.
Friday I had a few cars lined up to tune and Chris Young was busy all day fixing an odd issue on his car. The day before I had his EVO9 on the dyno with the FP Black and made 580'ish whp, the power was falling off quickly though and my guess was there was a valve spring issue. Chris and his friend Jonathan spent two days working on the car to get the head on/off and springs changed. The change was a success with the car gaining about 130 whp at 8,000 rpm, making 614 whp after the valve springs were changed. All the hard work paid off with a 140+ mph pass on Sunday but also resulted in taking the teeth off of 4th gear, again.
I also had the chance to tune Babur's EVO9 on the HTA86 and some E98, after swapping in some ID2000's the car ran better than it ever has and made 650'ish whp, a gain of about 40 whp over the last time it was tuned on C16, all at the same boost level.
It was then out for some video producing with the film crew for DSport. We ran about a 1/4 tank of fuel out of the Bad Bish doing some WOT runs on the street, running as fast as I had the balls to through some corners on Hoosier DOT's and just driving the car. The entire crew was impressed with how streetable a 9.0 EVO can be. We also did a bunch of "bloopers" and I have to say, this DVD when released with DSport is going to be a riot to watch.
Saturday the dyno was busy all day but mostly for cars that wanted to have their tunes touched up. Matt Smith was the Dyno King AWD winner with 666 whp in 3rd gear. I came in second with 660 whp in 3rd gear and Emery came in 3rd at 659 whp also in 3rd gear. Jonathan was the only FWD to dyno and he won with 235 whp in a FWD Talon.
Project White was back on the dyno making about 450 whp at 25 psi on 93 octane and then 509 whp/500 ft lbs on E85 at 30 psi of boost.
Kyle Stallard put his EVO8 on he just picked up. BR turbo back, BR air filter, it only made 199 whp, after giving him some ribbing about it being so low I put a base tune in it, then made 2-3 more pulls and had him at 290 whp for his $50 dyno fee, he left a happy man!
Saturday night............I drank too much. Kevin Lawson was up and about a dozen of us got together to hang out. Kevin and I polilshed off about a quart of Captain Morgans coconut and then I had to drink some beers, I'm toooo old for that crap. We took the DSport crew out on ATV's and showed them what living in the country is all about. The guys from DSport also picked up some great mortars at the fireworks store so we had a nice 4th of July in May. Had a great time.
While sitting around drinking I got to thinking about how low the power was on the Bad Bish and grabbed my laptop to find when I pulled the log the car only had 35 psi. Very odd as it should have been about 43 psi. Emery told me the Hoosier tires, which I NEVER dyno on ate up about 40 whp on his car over a firm side wall radial. Looking at the boost from my car though the 8 psi loss is what was doing it, it would seem.
Sunday morning came way to early. Slightly hung over and VERY tired I was kicking myself for drinking more than I should have, my "should have" would typically be 2-3 beers.
The Bad Bish has not run on the race track since about last September. A lot of dyno time but no track time. I was having trouble with the anti lag. Cris Andersen/Crispeed from AWD Motorsports fixed me up so I could get the boost under control. Thanks Cris. I was chicken shit though and backed it down as to not blow the DOT tires off. 1st run the car bogged. Checked the log and also had no boost, 34-35 psi. 2nd run I put the anti lag back up to 6200, the car left good but only ran a high 9 at about 150, still 35 psi of boost. Readjusted the boost controller and looked the car over, another pass, no boost. One more attempt on the 4th pass, same deal. I figured I had a boost leak but the boost was flat, checked the turbo, it was tight and spun nice. I stole the manual boost controller off the EVOX and put it on the Bad Bish and guessed at a setting. Next run still only ran a higher 9, checked the log and I had the boost set too high and it entered a "no timing" zone and the car had 0 degrees timing. I turned the boost down and the next run was out best of the day, 9.36 at 150 mph. Very disapointing and I could hear something didn't sound right. The next three runs we changed spark plugs each run and I could still hear something wasn't right. The car ran a 1.44 sixty foot on the DOT's so it was looking promising but would just lay down on the top end. Finally my hung over brain snapped to life and I knew what I was hearing, floating valves. It was extremely obvious at that point and I decided that was enough because the only fix for the problem is to pull the springs and replace them. Very odd that my car, Chris's car and one other customer this week all had valve spring issues. I don't know the last time mine were changed and it's been through a lot of cam testing. I may have one damaged or broken, it's hard to say but it will get fixed. The car was also having an impossible time of WOT shifting so the 9.36 was lifting to shift completely for each shift. The Tilton is overdue for a rebuild and is being pulled out. Very disapointing day. Too much street driving and screwing around with the car and not enough time racing it like I should be. Oh well, few weeks we'll go back and from the looks of things running 8's on a street tire isn't going to be real tough.
Matt Smith my good friend from N. Carolina was up and running 9's all day long until the finals where I think he just choked racing Curt Brown. Matt had a personal best of 9.72 and was happy to once again take the car home unbroken and ready to race again.
Curt Brown ran a personal best in his DSM with a 9.10 at 160.xx mph, 8's are close and I'm confident he'll be busting one out shortly.
Emery dominated AWD Class in his beautiful blue EVO8 and ran a personal best of 9.36 too, we tied for the two quickest EVO's of the day.
Kiggly was on hand in his FWD DSM, I didn't get a chance to talk to him but I think he ran an 8.3X, I heard something was giving him trouble and I think he may have left early.
I'm sure I am forgetting a ton but for now those are the highlights off the top of my head, just one man's report, there are hundreds of them out there from the race. Let's hear what you got!
