Yea man, I PMed ya guys. But I don't think I did the cams "perfectly" but good enough..(let me take that back, because car don't start). Ive been read the link boostedtalon posted, reading the Evo ix shop manual I got online yesterday (im happy with that one). If I have a bent valve, I have a bent valve, I just want to isolate the problem before I do something crazy and really fuck it up. But to answer RedEvoVII I did check the cam angle sensor postion and it is in the right postion sitting at the 3-4 "o' clock. The reg pin is in the reg hole on the intake cam.

I was suppose to take a trip to his house to check it out and was away for a few days on family business. I never got a text or call from him so im not sure what the status is on the car. I am still willing to take a look when i get the chance. Im sure this is putting him in a bind

Zero compression means that something isn't sealing in the compression process. Did you make sure that you installed the lash adjusters properly? If not, then they will hold the valves open yielding zero compression.

Ummm, Hopefully I did. But when I was doing the cams I bleed the lifters but I heard someone say you have to fill them back up with fresh oil. If thats the case I didnt do that. Is that how you completely bleed the lifters???

If you didn't fill them, that is typically OK other than they are very noise until they pump up. If they are not pumped up, with the valve cover off you should be able to depress the HLA's with your fingers. If you can't then they are pumped up and could be at the incorrect height holding the valves open. It only takes 1 (out of the 4) per cylinder to have no compression.

Hmmmmm, I did the lifters when I put in my cams and I was able to depress them. (but no start). I was rechecking timing (after rechecking timing), and I noticed that when my crank pulley is sitting at TDC the cam gear marks are lined up right! But I can move the crank pulley about 1/4 inch past the TDC mark and the cam gears are still line up. Does that sound right or messed up. (I can explain better if needed).

If you didn't pull down the front of the motor to the timing belt, then now is a great time to dive in and see why there is so much play in the timing assembly. I think the other guy's recommendation regarding sprocket installation is wise advice. On my E9, I was suppressed to see how the oiling holes could be mistaken for the alignment dowel hole. No compression means something is holding valves open. I don't remember you stating that you changed the valve springs. I don't know of any aftermarket cam that I would recommend running without uprated springs. If you didn't change the springs, then give good consideration to pulling the head. While it is off the car, inspect to make sure you didn't bend valves. Also while it is apart, have your machine shop install springs and touchup the valves. Last step, re-assemble paying very close attention to all details including both the exhaust and intake cam sensors.

    Good luck with your project.

since there is 2 timing marks on each cam gear is it possible you have one cam 180 degrees out?...i know a friend that did this on his 1g..

is this a typo? 'cause you say intake should be open, but then both should be "not fully closed". on my car, both intake and exhaust are "mostly" closed. i held up the stock cams and both intake and exhaust lobes match up to the stock. all in the same place.

i'm having this same problem. install went perfectly. all pulleys line up PERFECT. lobes are in same place as OEM. my intake cam sensor has the large vane at 3 or 4 o'clockish. i reconnected both cam sensors, crank angle sensor, and o2 sensor. turned over engine, by hand, FOUR times. no binding.
i bled my lifters. i can move the rockers by hand just fine 'cept for cylinder 3 intake and cylinder 2 exhaust, as they lobes are pushing down. i can even take a picture if you guys want.

car turns over and fires a bit 'till i let off the starter.

none of us here can figure out WTF is going on. i'm lost.

any update? i know usually, when someone fixes their issue, they never come back to tell everyone what was wrong. my search across the internet turns up multiple threads that just die off. no solution.

we only have one mark on each pulley. and, due to the dowels on the cams, there is no way to install them 180* out.

    @Kaj

no, it wasn't a typo, only a bit unclear...
The Intake valve should start to open when turning the crank further from TDC and the Exhaust Valve should close fully
So @TDC both are slightly open @ cyl. 4

My bad guy, I would like to say thanks for all the help...I am still deployed overseas and just go back online. When I left, the issue has not been fixed, I dont think I bent the valves but now that I think about it, I dont know if my timing belt jumped or not...hopefully I will be back in the states soon.

I just got my car back a week ago. The issue was defective cosworth 272 cams I have received. The intake cams didnt fit completely into the cam gear. So instead of starting my car and have a happy life, I bend ALL my valves (yay me). Fix was kelford 272 cams, new valves, street CNC force-fed head and it came alive (YAY).
