The AEM wideband gauge is one of the better units available.

I like how the AEM wideband is individually pre calibrated. Here is how AEM describes it...

Each AEM UEGO sensor is individually calibrated and a resistor integral at the connector body is laser trimmed with this value. This process replaces the traditional “free air” calibration procedure when changing sensors and implements a sensor specific calibration for unparalleled accuracy.

All Bosch widebands use that feature, it comes stock as part of the sensor, the problem is that the sensor degrades over time and now you have no way to recalibrate it to make up for the degradation, thats the problem with the AEM, not only will it be off but you will have no way of knowing how far off nor can you do anything about it other than replacing the sensor every couple of months.

AEM claims that this is the way to test one of their sensors.

Do you think that is an accurate way of testing, or could it still test out ok, but be degraded/out of calibration like you said? I was always under the assumption that a degraded/dead sensor would just fail a test like this and that is how you would know if it's time to be replaced.

would you recommend mounting your wideband permanently or just go the route of say the lm-2 and mount it on the end of the tailpipe? i dont care to mount mine permanently but either way is fine i suppose

Weld on a bung and leave it in place to what the manufacturers instructions say. I don't always follow those though and placed mine in the stockish location. It's been going strong for over a year. I wouldn't mount it in the end of the tailpipe...you may not end up with as accurate readings.
