What is she looking for? Are you talking about a regular wrx? Or a STi?

The wrx is pretty reliable, and you could upgrade and make some nice increase in hp with bolt ons. The downside about the regular wrx is it comes in 5spd and those trannies don't hold up well to abuse. A clutch job is a pain. And parts are much more expensive then a Evo's when modding. They also came with a 2.0L motor.

Now a STi doesn't fall short from fun. Their 6 spd trannies are basically impossible to break. They come with a bad ass 2.5L motor and a bigger turbo.

Clutch jobs are a walk in the park on subaru's...

90k is a lot of miles for wrx's but if its old guy driven it is probably ok. I'd still have it looked over. Check motor compression and drive it to make sure the clutch and transmission are in order.

05's are nice because they have the better looking interior, they have the 2.0 which doesn't blow transmissions as bad as the 06+ and isn't so crappy as the 02-03 wrx.

90k miles on a 2005 is a lot, in my mind. I have a 2002 WRX w/ 85k miles, bone stock except for some really retardedly simple things; ie, removed the silencer from the air box, things like that.

You're never going to get as much power of the Subaru 2.0 as you will with a 4G63/4b11t, especially for the cost. How much is she looking to spend on this 2005?

If you're comparing an 05 WRX 2.0 to, say, an Evo, you'll be disappointed. But for the money, assuming it's in decent condition, they're fun as hell little cars, just don't go in expecting too much without big bucks (ie, a hybrid 2.5 or something bat-shit crazy like that).

It was 9,000 i'm not trying to compare it to a evo. If you can find me and evo for 9,000 dollars then i am all ears ..I love 4g63's but as far a DSM's i did that whole thing still have it in the garage with a blown motor....Its just waiting for its day again....thought a basic wrx would be a safe in the winter fun toy for her to have...

IMO subaru's are far Superior in the snow compared to evo's. They also usually require far less work, the reliability is good when the previous owner hasn't flogged the crap outta it.

+1 Now that I have had both a high hp(400(its high in their world lol)) Subaru and and midrange Evo(350ish) I can say that the Subaru has a nicer interior and in a lesser form would be a great daily driver. HOWEVER, I would take an Evo over ANY Subaru ever. As long as you keep them stock or near stock you will be fine.

My wife has a nicely setup '07 WRX. She is very happy with it and I find myself driving it sometimes just b/c it is a fun car and far smoother than the Evo. I highly suggest you look at the 2006-07 WRX instead though since the interior quality is a lot better, they came with the 2.5L engine, and they don't have a cat in the up-pipe.

    Here are her current mods:

    ECUFlash tune
    STI TMIC
    SPT intake
    SPT catback
    Megan bellmouth catless 3" downpipe
Perrin 22mm adjustable rear anti-sway bar
    Whiteline rear swaybar end-links
    Eibach Prokit lowering springs
    Redline tranny/drivetrain fluids
    Perrin shifter bushings
    STI 5-speed short-shifter
    Subaru MOMO shift knob
    Prosport gauges (boost & voltage)

I can somewhat agree except subaru seats suck compared to the recaro's.
