Default If burning oil...How to tell if is the turbo or valve seals?

    It's not my car, it's afriend's Nissan S13 silvia 1.8 turbo.

His car is burning oil, mainy at iddle. But we took the turbo out and it didn't have almost any shaft play.
So we don't know if it's the turbo or something else.
Can a turbo leak oil without the bearings worn?

How can we diagnose if th oil is coming from the turbo, valve stem seals, head gasket....?

    Thanks.

I think when the turbo is bad it only burns oil under boost. If it puffs a cloud of smoke on startup that's usually valve seals.

You could check the exhaust manifold too. If it has oil in it than its the valve seals, if not its the turbo. Mine's smoking too, but I haven't checked it. Luckily I have a rod knock so I'll be looking at it while fixing that.

We took the ex. manifold out and there was carbon deposits on the runners but no oil. At least the black stuff wasn't wet.

Now check the o2 housing on the turbo.

It didn't look oiled i think.
What I saw was that the O2 sensor, exhaust turbo fins and wastegate flapper were white! That means that the car is running lean?

let the car idle for like 10 minutes, after it idles for awile go out and floor the gas, not to where you are gonna hit the limiter but just rev it up good, if you get a cloud of oil smoke behind you it is most likely valve seals.
