I think its time to discuss something that I know will get a lot of posts and is well....... something that should finally be well known. Especially for those 2G owners. It was an interesting post recently that my buddy "dsm0485" put up.

Are ACT good clutches to use or is there something better?

Now everyone knows about these clutches and how they perform. They are good clutches indeed. But the need for criticism doesnt lie there. It lies in the fact that the clutch pedal pressure increases and puts excessive load on the thrust bearings. And for those who have been to magnus motorsports, u know all about the crankwalk. Especially in 2g's. Now just to put some limits on this discussion:

1) fully balanced and blueprinted engines do not apply, as the need
for the harmonic dampner is lost as there is virtually no vibration
in the crankshaft and so forth.

2) references made to 1g cars as they rarely ever suffer from
crankwalk due to their 6 bolt design.

3) That puts shep's car off bounds (1g and balanced engine)

The point here is focusing on those with 2g cars with even
considerable mods in which a performance clutch is or isnt necessarly
required.

Oh and heres my opinion:

I would honestly have to consider putting one in a 2g if I had the choice, but ultimately I honestly never would. The increased clutch pressure puts a lot more strain than necessary on the stock clutch linkages and why must we have to feel cool to have a clutch that feels like 100 pounds. Moreover, I would overall vote for a four puck design. The reason for this is that with a 2500lb clamping force being transmitted through four pucks instead of six or full disc = less chance of slipping. In my opinion better launces and better shifting time.

So what clutch would I recommend that is in the same price range as the ACT 2600 and delivers better performance in my opinion and is better for your engine.......

Bingo baby!!!

It also has a cool feature...... the hotter is gets, the better it sticks!!

ACT may very well be the most used clutch amoung dsmers but I beleive this should be.

So what do u think???

Do you work for them or something?

I don't have an ACT clutch, I have a Clutchmasters PP (2500lb) with an ACT street disk. I think its great. My 2G has 96,000 miles and I have had the clutch in there since 42,000 miles (changing the disk once).

Not all 2Gs crankwalk by the way.

I don't really know what the point of this post is. I think everybody who owns a DSM knows the "real deal" on ACT clutches and that is they are tried and true. I have no doubts that other companies make good clutches too, just I have never seen/driven a car with one like you are describing.

That's a nice looking clutch assembly. But I think that it would be too aggressive for street usage and cause a lot of breakage. The 4 and 6 puck clutches are excellent for what they are, track clutches. For the majority of DSM owners that don't take their cars to the track this might not be the best option.

If your engine is going to walk its going to walk. A heavy pressure plate may speed up the process, but is not the sole cause of crankwalk.

Read Marco's article www.magnusmotorsports.com

Ill stick to my tried and true ACT. Or I will look into twin disk clutches later down the road
